Year-end Summary for 2024: U.S. Cannabis Industry Reaches $33 Billion, a Perfect Finish.
Despite facing obstacles such as price drops, profit compression, and low operational efficiency, the future prospects of the US cannabis industry are brighter than ever before.
In just a decade, the industry has grown from a legalized state to a national industry with enormous market potential, generating over billions of dollars in retail sales each year.
Currently, 41 states in the US have legalized some form of cannabis, and over 80% of Americans have access to cannabis, creating job opportunities for 500,000 people in over 25,000 companies. As the fastest-growing consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry in the world, the US cannabis sales have grown by a whopping six times, with a 28-fold increase in product numbers.
According to a new study by a cannabis industry data company, the US cannabis industry is growing rapidly, with estimated retail sales surpassing $33 billion and wholesale sales reaching nearly $12 billion by 2024.
After a decade of expansion, the US cannabis industry has gradually developed from a single-state market into a national industry, supporting 500,000 jobs and over 25,000 companies across 41 states that have legalized some form of cannabis after exhibiting strong growth in their markets.
With more and more states implementing cannabis legalization frameworks, and with the push for new licenses, retail expansions, and constantly changing policy environments, the US cannabis market is predicted to grow to $55 billion by 2030.
The report further details that as of October 2024, US cannabis retail sales have reached $33 billion, with a 7% YoY growth rate, with dry cannabis flower remaining the highest-selling product category at 40% of retail sales, followed by e-cigarettes (22%), edibles (14%), pre-rolls (13%), and concentrates (12%). Leading in per capita sales are states such as Alaska and Michigan, where the tourism industry and mature retail networks drive market demand.
Emerging markets such as Missouri, Maryland, and New York are growing rapidly, driven by an increasing number of licenses and retail expansions. Retail license sales are highest in states like Maryland, with each pharmacy generating $11.6 million in sales. Conversely, oversaturation in markets like Oklahoma has led to a drop in sales per license to $400,000, highlighting the necessity of strategic licensing.
Moreover, with the potential of the federal government reclassifying cannabis as a category III substance for regulation, thereby reducing the tax burden of 280E, the industry could see an influx of $2 to $3 billion in annual cash flow.
This change in cannabis policy, coupled with expanding retail infrastructure, is expected to enhance profitability and market access. Finally, with major population centers establishing legal cannabis markets, the industry has long-term growth opportunities. Despite challenges such as price drops and low operational efficiency, supply chain improvements and strategic market expansion are creating new opportunities.
Key players are focusing on high-growth states such as Illinois, Michigan, and Massachusetts to leverage ongoing demand growth, while emerging markets like New York, Maryland, and Ohio are predicted to become multi-billion-dollar markets, with expected 70% growth in the number of cannabis shops.
With record-breaking sales, expanding retail capacity, and evolving policy environments in conjunction, the US cannabis industry is rapidly developing. Meanwhile, it is undergoing significant structural changes, laying a solid foundation for strong market growth and profitability.
At the same time, potential policy changes, such as the federal government reclassifying cannabis as a Schedule III substance, are also creating new growth and profitability opportunities.
