Paper-based materials are highly favored for their recyclability, and how to enhance their functionality while ensuring consumer safety and supply chain efficiency has become a shared focus for industry leaders. This article will spotlight Mondi and JiaYi Packaging, exploring how these two companies are driving technological innovation to provide next-generation sustainable packaging solutions for the industry
Mengdi: From "ultimate barrier paper" to multifunctional kraft paper
As a global leader in sustainable packaging, Mengdi is continuously expanding the application boundaries of paper-based materials through product innovation.
1."The Ultimate Functional Barrier Paper":
Mengdi has recently launched a product dubbed the "ultimate functional barrier paper," designed to meet the most stringent packaging requirements. This barrier paper is claimed to offer "exceptional" protection against oxygen, water vapor, and grease, making it suitable for high-barrier applications such as instant coffee sticks, tea bags, dried food seasonings, cereal bars, and bouillon cubes. The introduction of this solution follows Mondi's €16 million investment in technological upgrades at its plant in Środa Śląska, Poland.
This paper-based packaging is compatible with existing horizontal and vertical form-fill-seal (FFS) packaging production lines and can be integrated into existing production processes, helping brands phase out non-recyclable multi-material packaging. Dirk Gabriel, Chief Operating Officer of Mondi Consumer Flexible Packaging, stated that this is a concrete step toward the company’s MAP2030 sustainability commitment. Currently, 87% of Mondi’s packaging solutions are reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
2.Ad/Vantage Smooth Brown: A Kraft Paper That Fills a Market GapIn addition to high-barrier paper
In addition to high-barrier paper, Mondi has also introduced Ad/Vantage Smooth Brown Semi-Extensible kraft paper. This innovative kraft paper, developed over three years, achieves an optimal balance of strength, extensibility, puncture resistance, and a smooth surface. Its smooth surface provides excellent printability and coating performance, offering distinct advantages over traditional rough kraft paper. This makes it particularly suitable as a substrate for Mondi's barrier papers or for use in FFS packaging of items with sharp edges or heavy weight, such as toys, spare parts, and construction materials.
This kraft paper is made from responsibly sourced virgin fibers (with optional PEFC or FSC® certification) and is recyclable within the European paper recycling stream. It also ensures stable performance on existing processing and filling lines, enhancing supply chain efficiency. Sabrina Kloesch from Mondi Technical Sales Service noted that this paper "fills a gap in the market" by combining excellent runnability, high strength, and a smooth surface suitable for coating.
Jiayi Packaging: Solving child safety problems with cardboard
As a global leader in sustainable consumer packaging, Gidea Packaging has taken a different approach by focusing its innovation on a unique pain point: child-safe packaging. In the past, the U.S. market had almost no plastic-free alternatives for laundry detergent pod packaging that met child safety requirements. Gidea Packaging’s designers and engineers successfully tackled this challenge. The company developed the CleanClose™ paperboard laundry detergent packaging, utilizing the patented-pending ChildBlock™ technology. This technology has been certified as child-resistant in accordance with U.S. Federal Regulation 16 CFR 1700.20.
This packaging was developed by JiaYi Packaging in collaboration with Radienz Living, a leading manufacturer of laundry detergent capsules in North America. It is designed to be easy for adults to open while difficult for children to access, with a clear "click" sound to alert consumers when it is properly closed. Chuck Tarlton, Director of New Business Development at JiaYi Packaging, stated that this innovation successfully strikes a balance between stringent child safety requirements, cost-effectiveness, recyclability, supply chain efficiency, and an exceptional consumer experience. Tom McLennison, Vice President of Research and Development at Radienz Living, also emphasized that this product offers customers a solution made from cardboard, ensuring child safety while optimizing reliability and costs throughout the supply chain.
CleanClose™ packaging is delivered in a flat format, enhancing warehouse and transportation efficiency. The number of packages per pallet is at least 10% higher than that of plastic bags. The packaging design can withstand up to 400 pounds of top compression force, supporting self-palletization and meeting the supply chain demands of membership stores. Made from cardboard containing 50% recycled fibers, the packaging is recyclable in curbside paper streams and has been pre-approved as "Widely Recyclable" by the How2Recycle® program.
The future of functional paper-based packaging
These two industry news stories together outline a clear path for the packaging industry's transition toward sustainable development:
Functionality as the Foundation: Whether it's high barrier properties, high strength, or child safety, paper-based packaging is no longer a functional "compromise." Through technological innovation, it is becoming more robust and practical.

Innovation Driven by Demand: Mondi’s kraft paper addresses a market gap, while JIAYI Packaging tackles the specific and critical pain point of child safety. Successful innovations stem from a deep understanding of market and customer needs.
Collaboration Is Key: The partnership between JIAYI Packaging and Radienz Living, as well as the close collaboration within Mondi’s internal R&D, sales, and product development departments, demonstrate that cross-company or cross-departmental synergy is crucial in complex packaging innovations.

It is foreseeable that with continuous technological advancements, future paper-based packaging will not only be an environmentally friendly choice but also the optimal solution in terms of functionality, safety, and efficiency. This will enable it to fully replace traditional plastics in the packaging field, ushering the industry into a new green era.
